In this tutorial workshop we conducted a series of media experiments.
Pencil:
At this station we were focusing on what techniques can be made using pencils. We used water colour pencils and inketeness pencils. Both pencils work in the same process, colour then add some water to blend and the colour goes from a dull colour to vibrant. The techniques used were cross-hatching, stippling, series of lines; thick/thin, light/dark. I loved the effect of the water and my favourite was the inketeness pencils. The colours were very vibrant and caught the eye.
Charcoal:
We moved onto charcoal drawing where we used two different charcoals; willow and compressed sticks. We experimented again with different lines (cross hatching, scumming) using our finger or an eraser to mark and blend the charcoal. I was able to develop some interesting effects that gave me ideas for the classroom such as looking at moods and emotions in art.
Ink:
We used to conduct a series of media experiments using different drawing techniques and materials. We used an ink pen which was difficult to get a good result for me. You had to press down but not too hard so you would not bend the tip. Water was used for blending and had a good effect.
Pen / Marker:
Another station set up was where we used pen and markers using a series of techniques (hatching, straight/curved lines) and different grips (loose/tight). I enjoyed trying the different techniques and although it was interesting I couldn’t help but be more inspired by the other mediums I was exploring.
Oil / Chalk Pastel:
This station we explored oil/chalk pastels. We used our techniques and blended the colours using our finger. We also experimented using different papers. I liked the way the colours blended, it was very effective.
Effects using Different Tools and Techniques:
We looked at different painting techniques such as stippling, feathering, hatching/ cross hatching, blotting and blending and by using some other materials we could create textures. It was an eye opener for me to see so many techniques, I found it very interesting. I had never thought about different strokes or the way you used your brush/tools to create effect and texture.

Relationship to key concepts of Visual Arts
(e.g. the elements / principles of art)
Explores the qualities of different drawing media and tools such as graphite (‘lead’) and colour pencils, fibre tip pens, crayons, brushes, sticks and computer applications in drawing. • recognises how qualities such as colour, thickness, length and density of lines can assist them to depict various things
