In this tutorial workshop we looked at creating a clay sculpture. We looked at a number of techniques including rolling clay, scratching designs in clay, smoothing clay, subtracting and adding to the sculpture. The clay we used was moist clay so it can air dry and does not have to be put in a kiln.
So I had to decide on what sort of sculpture I was going to make, as this was my first attempt at making something using clay I did not feel too adventurous. I started rolling the clay trying to smooth as I went. My teacher explained not to use too much water but the temptation and my first instinct was to wet it because I thought it would be easier to manipulate, Big mistake it just got sloppy and I could not do anything with it. Luckily I started off with just a small piece of my clay because I sort of listened to my teacher but tried it anyway. So I thought I would do a simple design and work at being able to add and subtract from sculpture. I used a wire end clay tool to put a pattern on my sculpture. I was pleased with the result and probably would be a little more adventurous next time. In class I would choose to do this with students, again with the techniques used in all other workshops it could be used here, patterns, prints etc.
